Jewelry Import VAT in the EU and UK: What Importers Pay

Holycome Editorial · September 15, 2026 · 12 min read

Duty is not the only import cost. VAT adds 20% on top. Here is how EU and UK import VAT works and how to plan for it.

Jewelry importers often budget the duty and forget the VAT. Then the shipment arrives and the broker asks for an additional 20% before release. VAT on imports into the EU and UK is a real cost, and it is calculated on top of the goods value, the duty, and the freight. Understanding how it works, and how to defer it, protects your cash flow.

How import VAT works

When goods arrive in the EU or UK, the importing country charges VAT on the landed value. The landed value is the goods price plus freight plus duty. The VAT rate varies by country: 20% in the UK, 19-27% across EU member states. The VAT is collected by customs at the border, before the goods are released. You pay it, and then you can reclaim it if you are a VAT-registered business.

Deferred VAT: the cash flow win

If you are a VAT-registered business in the UK or EU, you can defer the VAT payment. Instead of paying at the border and reclaiming later, you account for the VAT on your regular VAT return. This means you do not tie up cash in a border payment. The scheme is called PVA (Postponed VAT Accounting) in the UK and similar systems exist in most EU countries. Ask your broker to set it up. It is the single biggest cash flow improvement for regular importers.

IOSS for small shipments

For e-commerce shipments under EUR 150 into the EU, the IOSS (Import One-Stop Shop) system lets you collect VAT at the point of sale rather than at the border. This simplifies the customer experience: no surprise VAT bill on delivery. IOSS is for DTC brands selling directly to consumers. For wholesale shipments above EUR 150, standard import VAT applies.

Budgeting the landed cost

A common budgeting mistake is to calculate landed cost as factory price plus duty. The real landed cost is factory price plus freight plus duty plus VAT (if not deferred). On a $10,000 shipment into the UK at 20% VAT, the VAT is $2,000. If you have not budgeted it, the shipment sits at the border while you find the cash. Budget the VAT, even if you will reclaim it.

Reclaiming VAT

If you are VAT-registered and you sell the jewelry to VAT-registered customers, you can reclaim the import VAT on your VAT return. The VAT becomes a cash flow timing issue, not a cost. If you sell to end consumers (DTC), you charge VAT on the sale and offset the import VAT against it. Either way, being VAT-registered is essential for any serious importer into the EU or UK.

The reverse charge for B2B sales

If you sell wholesale to other VAT-registered businesses in the EU, the VAT can be zero-rated under the reverse charge. You sell the jewelry to a German boutique, and you charge 0% VAT. The German boutique accounts for the VAT on their own return. This means no VAT is collected or paid on the B2B sale. To use the reverse charge, you must verify the customer's VAT number (via VIES) and keep the proof of their VAT registration on file. For wholesale brands selling across the EU, the reverse charge simplifies every cross-border sale. Set up the VIES verification on every B2B order.

The VAT registration timing

Register for VAT before your first shipment, not after. The registration takes 2-6 weeks depending on the country. If you ship a $20,000 order and are not VAT-registered, you pay the VAT at the border and cannot reclaim it. That is a 20% cost on the entire shipment. Register first, budget the VAT, and use deferred accounting. The registration paperwork is tedious, but it is the difference between VAT as a cash flow timing issue and VAT as a permanent cost.

The Brexit effect on UK VAT

Since Brexit, UK imports from outside the UK follow a separate VAT system from the EU. A shipment into the UK uses UK VAT rules. A shipment into Germany uses EU VAT rules. A brand selling to both markets needs two registrations and two systems. The UK uses PVA (Postponed VAT Accounting). The EU uses the reverse charge for B2B. The systems are similar but not identical. Do not assume one registration covers both. Register in each market you ship into, and use the right system for each. The admin is more work, but the landed cost math is simpler when you do it right.

We provide landed cost estimates that include duty, freight, and VAT for EU and UK-bound orders. More on our shipping and duty support is on the logistics page. Budget the VAT, set up deferred accounting, and the border payment stops being a surprise.
