What makes paraiba different commercially

Paraiba tourmaline is defined by its colour, a neon blue-green that comes from copper and manganese in the crystal. No other stone reproduces it, which is the whole commercial case: it is a colour you cannot substitute. The constraint is durability. Tourmaline sits at 7 to 7.5 Mohs and is heat sensitive, so it is not a daily-wear stone in the way ruby and sapphire are. That combination, unique colour with moderate durability, dictates how you buy it.

Colour grading

  • Neon blue-green. The top grade and the reason the stone exists. Highest price and highest desirability.
  • Blue-green. Strong but less electric. The practical volume grade.
  • Greenish blue. Accessible, and it suits yellow gold and vintage designs.
  • Pale or washed. Reject unless the price reflects it. Pale paraiba reads as generic blue topaz to a customer.

Ask for photographs in daylight rather than studio lighting. Paraiba colour shifts more under different lighting than any other stone we supply, and a studio photograph can make a modest stone look vivid.

Handling and setting requirements

RequirementDetail
Protective settingBezel or a four-prong with substantial prongs, because tourmaline chips more readily than corundum
CleaningWarm soapy water and a soft brush only; no ultrasonic, no steam, no chemical dips
Thermal shockAvoid during setting; tourmaline is heat sensitive and can fracture at the bench
Wear guidanceRecommend removal before sport, swimming or household cleaning
PackingIndividual bagging with a care card, since handling instructions are part of the product

Quality control

  • Colour assessed in daylight and photographed for the buyer before setting, since the colour is the product.
  • Stones inspected for internal fractures that would propagate during setting, because paraiba is more fracture-prone than corundum.
  • Setting performed by setters experienced with heat-sensitive stones, at lower torch temperatures.
  • Post-setting inspection at 10x specifically for edge chips introduced at the bench.
  • A care card included in every parcel as a standard item rather than an optional extra.

Questions about Lab Grown Paraiba Tourmaline Jewelry

Why is lab grown paraiba more expensive than ruby or sapphire?

The price is entirely about colour. Paraiba neon blue-green comes from copper and manganese in the crystal, and no other stone reproduces it, so there is no substitute to compete the price down. At equivalent size, expect paraiba to price well above ruby and sapphire. It is the one stone type in our range where we advise against price competition and recommend positioning on the colour itself, with a protective setting and clear care guidance.

Can paraiba be worn every day?

It can, but we do not recommend it without qualifications. Tourmaline is 7 to 7.5 Mohs with heat sensitivity, so it chips more readily than ruby or sapphire and should not be cleaned ultrasonically or with steam. For daily wear, specify a bezel or a four-prong with substantial prongs, and include a care card advising removal before sport, swimming or household cleaning. Many of our buyers position paraiba as an occasional-wear or anniversary piece.

What MOQ applies to paraiba?

Standard MOQ is 30 pieces per style in 925 sterling silver and 10 pieces in gold, consistent with our other coloured stone lines. Because demand for this stone is genuine but narrow, we also accept a trial order of 5 pieces on stock designs so you can test demand before committing to depth. We would rather you ordered five and reordered than ordered thirty and held dead stock in a niche colour.

Can you guarantee colour match across a reorder?

We can get close, but we will not promise an exact match on paraiba, and no supplier honestly can, because the colour is a function of the growth batch. We photograph and record the stones supplied on each order so a reorder can be matched against the previous batch, and we will tell you in advance if a batch is visibly different. If exact continuity matters for your line, order the full quantity you need in one run.
