Sustainability claims in the jewellery trade range from well-documented to pure marketing. This page sets out what laboratory-grown material genuinely offers, what we can evidence, and what we cannot claim on your behalf. We would rather you knew the boundary than repeat a claim you cannot support.
What laboratory-grown material genuinely offers
| Dimension | Laboratory-grown | Mined equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Land disturbance | None; production is in an industrial facility | Open-pit or underground mining footprint |
| Water use | Contained and largely recirculated in a controlled facility | Site-specific, varies widely, and often locally significant |
| Conflict risk | No conflict-financing exposure by construction | Managed by the Kimberley Process and national schemes |
| Supply predictability | Manufactured to order; volume can be planned | Subject to geological and political availability |
| Energy intensity | Significant; high-temperature reactors draw real power | Also significant per carat recovered |
| Traceability to origin | Possible at batch level, not at individual stone level | Difficult to establish at the individual stone level |
The honest framing is that laboratory-grown material removes mining-related land, water and conflict exposure, while introducing energy-intensity exposure. It is a different trade-off, not an unqualified improvement. Buyers who state it that way are harder to challenge and more credible with informed customers.
What we can evidence, and what we cannot
| Claim | Can we evidence it? | What we provide |
|---|---|---|
| Stones are laboratory-grown, not mined | Yes | Material declaration with every export shipment, plus IGI, GRA or NGTC reports |
| Growth method, CVD or HPHT | Yes, per order | Method stated on the specification sheet and certificate |
| Post-growth treatment disclosed | Yes, where applied | Written disclosure on the specification sheet |
| Nickel release compliance for the EU | Yes | Alloy declaration and test documentation on request |
| Metal purity | Yes | Hallmark and assay-compliant documentation |
| Specific energy source of the growth reactor | No | We do not have visibility into upstream reactor energy sourcing |
| Carbon-neutral or certified-carbon status | No | We do not hold a neutrality certification and will not claim one |
| Individual stone origin to a named grower | Partly | Batch-level records; not stone by stone for melee |
We publish this table because buyers resell our claims to their customers. A claim you cannot substantiate is a liability that travels down the supply chain and eventually lands on the retailer.
Statement on conflict-free sourcing
- We do not trade in mined diamonds, so we carry no exposure to conflict-financed rough. All diamond material we supply is laboratory-grown.
- For coloured gemstone material, all supply is laboratory-grown. Where a customer specifically requires natural stones, we decline rather than source from unverified channels.
- We do not accept, buy or resell stones of unknown origin from third parties. Material enters our production only through our own supply line, with documentation attached.
- Precious metals are purchased through licensed domestic suppliers with assay documentation.
Labour and workplace standards in our own facility
- All staff are employed directly, with written contracts and social insurance contributions as required by Chinese labour law.
- Standard working hours with legally mandated rest days. Overtime is voluntary and paid at the statutory premium rate.
- No child labour, no forced labour, and no recruitment fees charged to workers. We do not use labour brokers for production staff.
- The setting and polishing areas are ventilated and equipped with extraction for polishing dust. Personal protective equipment is provided and its use is enforced.
- A formal grievance channel exists with a named person responsible, and records are reviewed quarterly.
We are not claiming a third-party social audit certificate. We are stating the standards we operate to, and we are willing to have them verified during a factory visit or a third-party audit commissioned by a customer.
Compliance documentation we hold or can obtain
| Document | Availability |
|---|---|
| Business licence and export registration | Available on request, before an order |
| Material declaration for laboratory-grown stones | Issued automatically with every export shipment |
| IGI, GRA or NGTC grading reports | Per stone above 0.30 ct, on request |
| Nickel release and alloy declaration | On request, for EU-bound orders |
| Assay documentation for gold | On request |
| Third-party factory audit | We accept customer-commissioned audits and coordinate access and documentation |
Packaging and waste
- Standard export packing uses recyclable board cartons. Plastic use is limited to anti-tarnish bags, which are necessary to prevent silver tarnish claims.
- FSC-certified paper options are available for gift boxes and cards on request, with a modest cost premium.
- Polishing waste and bench sweeps are collected and sold to a licensed refiner rather than discarded.
- Leftover calibrated melee is returned to stock rather than scrapped, which reduces total material consumption per finished piece.
If your market requires a specific sustainability claim on your packaging or listings, tell us before production. It is far easier to align documentation at the order stage than to retrofit a claim afterwards.
