Jewelry Sourcing Trips: Wuzhou vs Guangzhou, Which to Book

Holycome Editorial · September 12, 2026 · 12 min read

Wuzhou and Guangzhou are both Chinese jewelry hubs, but they sell different products. This guide picks the right city for your buy and avoids the tourist-trap tours.

A buyer in Toronto booked 5 days in Guangzhou for her first sourcing trip and came back with a stack of fashion jewelry catalogs, no stone suppliers, and a credit card bill that would take two quarters to pay off. She had picked the wrong city. Wuzhou and Guangzhou are both jewelry sourcing hubs in southern China, but they sell different things, and the right trip depends on what you are buying.

What Wuzhou actually is

Wuzhou, in Guangxi, is the moissanite and synthetic gemstone capital of China. Roughly 70% of the world's lab-grown moissanite rough is cut and polished here. The market is low-rise, warehouse-style, and the suppliers sell by the parcel, not by the piece. You will find loose moissanite, cubic zirconia, lab-grown sapphire and emerald, and a small set of silver factories that buy stones locally. See moissanite price per carat in 2026 and lab-grown emerald parcels.

What Guangzhou actually is

Guangzhou has two jewelry markets worth knowing: Guangzhou Liwan Plaza (high-end gold, jade, diamonds, brand-name-grade settings) and Hualin International Jade Jewelry City. The Panyu district outside the city holds the actual factories — plating, casting, stone setting, branded OEM. Prices are higher than Wuzhou, but the finish level is two tiers up. Guangzhou is where you go when you need finished silver or gold jewelry, not loose stones.

Match the trip to the buy

Go to Wuzhou if: you buy loose stones (moissanite, CZ, lab-grown colored stones), you want parcel pricing, or you are building a melee program. Go to Guangzhou if: you buy finished 925 or 14K settings, you need private-label OEM, or you want to inspect a plating line. The two cities are a 4–5 hour train ride apart, so a combined 7–10 day trip is reasonable once you have done this before — but for a first trip, pick one. Walk through auditing a Chinese jewelry factory on first order before you go.

Money, language and negotiation on the ground

Wuzhou prices are usually quoted in RMB per carat, and a 20% opening discount is normal on parcel deals. Guangzhou prices are firmer; expect 5–10% off and a price list that does not move much until you commit volume. Bring WeChat Pay linked to a Chinese bank card if possible; cash works but is clunky for parcels over USD 2,000. Most mid-tier suppliers speak broken English; hire a local interpreter for USD 80–120 per day for serious factory visits.

Logistics: what to book and what to skip

Stay central in Wuzhou (Wuzhou Marriott or the nearby business hotels) and near Changshou Road in Guangzhou. Skip the pre-arranged "factory tour" sold on TripAdvisor — those stop at tourist showrooms. Do arrange one or two factory visits in Panyu via a supplier you have already chatted with on Alibaba. See insured parcel shipping from China for getting samples home, and wholesale jewelry insurance for stock in transit for the main order.

What to bring home: samples vs orders

On a first trip, do not place large orders on the ground. Buy samples (USD 200–500 per city), photograph them, test plating and stones, and place the PO from home after you have compared. Wuzhou markets will let you buy single stones at 1.5x wholesale; Guangzhou factories will not sell single pieces. The moissanite reference covers the stone chemistry and grading notes you can use while inspecting parcels.

Getting samples home without paying full freight

Wuzhou and Guangzhou both have DHL, FedEx and SF International counters near the markets. Ship samples by courier (USD 40–80 per parcel, 3–5 days). For the main order, consolidate through a freight forwarder — sea LCL works for 50kg+, air freight for under 50kg. See insured parcel shipping from China for the insurance and declared-value setup.

FAQ

How long should a first sourcing trip be?

5–6 days in one city. Wuzhou 3 days (parcel markets + 2 factory visits), Guangzhou 4 days (Liwan + Panyu factory walks). Add a travel buffer day.

Can I just do this online instead of flying?

For reorders and standard SKUs, yes. For first-time stone buying or a new private-label line, the trip pays for itself on the first order because you see grading and finish you cannot see on a sample video.

What is the minimum order on the ground?

Wuzhou: parcels of 50–100 stones per size. Guangzhou factories: 100–300 pieces per design for OEM. Market stalls will sell single pieces, but prices are retail.

When is the best time to go?

March–April and September–October. Avoid the two weeks around Chinese New Year and the Canton Fair weeks in April and October — hotels triple in price and factories are busy.

HOLYCOME ships from the Wuzhou cutting clusters and Guangzhou Panyu workshops, so you can see both without flying. Ask for the current stone parcel sheet and a finished-jewelry sample box before planning your trip.
