Peak-Season Lead Times: When to Reorder Moissanite and 925 Silver

Holycome Editorial · August 26, 2026 · 12 min read

The order that feels late in July feels impossibly late in October. Peak-season lead time planning is the difference between selling through and empty shelves.

Most inventory mistakes do not happen in December. They happen in August. That is the month when a buyer looks at the calendar, thinks there is plenty of time, and places a reorder that would have arrived in four weeks during slow season. By the time that order is actually produced, inspected, shipped, and cleared through customs, proposal season is half over and the engagement case has been looking thin for weeks. Peak-season lead time planning is the single most undervalued skill in wholesale jewelry buying, and it rewards anyone who builds it into a calendar.

Why lead times stretch in the second half

Factory capacity is not unlimited. From roughly August through November, Chinese jewelry manufacturers run at near-full capacity because every importer in the world is trying to stock for holiday and proposal season. A standard four-to-six-week production lead time can stretch to eight, ten, or twelve weeks during that window, and that is before you add shipping. Sea freight from Asia to the U.S. West Coast alone takes two to four weeks, and customs clearance can add unpredictable days on top.

This is why the sample-to-bulk rhythm matters. Buyers who already understand the full workflow from sample to bulk production are less surprised, because they know that a corrected sample, a reapproval, and a slow season stack up faster than they expect. A sample approved in September does not become shelf inventory in October.

Build a backward-counting reorder calendar

The fix is to work backward from your selling season. For a holiday or proposal push that begins in mid-November, count back your expected peak-season production time, add shipping and customs, add a buffer for inspection, and you land on the order date. Most retailers find they need to place peak-season reorders by late July or early August to feel comfortable. The order that feels early in June is the order that arrives exactly on time in November.

Combine that production math with the selling calendar itself. Our holiday jewelry stocking calendar maps which weeks matter for which occasions, from Christmas gifting through Valentine's Day and the spring proposal surge. Lay your production lead times on top of that calendar and you can see the exact week each category needs to be ordered.

Separate your fast movers from your slow movers

Not every SKU needs a peak-season order. Run your reorders in two tiers. The fast, proven sellers in your case, the ones you reorder every quarter, should be ordered early and deep, because you know they will move. The experimental, trend-driven SKUs can wait, or be ordered in smaller quantities once peak capacity frees up. Pouring limited production slots into untested styles is the classic way to end up with a full shelf of the wrong thing.

If you are still refining which SKUs deserve that early, deep order, start with the basics covered in the first wholesale jewelry order process. Even experienced buyers benefit from revisiting the structure: what sells out, what turns slow, and what never should have been ordered in the first place. That honest review is what lets you put peak-season capacity behind the winners.

Communicate with your supplier before capacity tightens

A supplier who knows your forecast in July will reserve production slots for you. A supplier you first contact in October has already promised those slots to earlier buyers. Send your peak-season forecast to your manufacturer early, even as a rough outline, so they can plan their production schedule around you. This is a relationship play as much as a logistics one; the buyers who communicate ahead get the priority slots, the faster inspections, and the more flexible shipping choices.

Also build a buffer. A one-week contingency in your arrival date protects you against a port delay, a customs hold, or a factory correction. Relying on an order to land on November tenth for a November fifteenth sale is how you end up disappointed. A buffer is cheap insurance that most retailers skip.

Empty shelves in peak season are almost never an accident. They are the result of an order placed in August that assumed July lead times. Treat peak-season production like a fixed calendar, count backward, order your winners early and deep, and tell your supplier what you need before the rush begins. That discipline is what separates the retailers who sell through November from the ones who spend December explaining why the case is bare.

Keep a small safety stock of your absolute best sellers on hand at all times, independent of any scheduled order. That buffer absorbs the weeks when a factory delay lands exactly when your store would otherwise go bare. The cost of holding a few extra rings is trivial next to the cost of telling a bride-to-be that the engagement case is empty.
