Wholesale Jewelry Packaging: Options, Costs and Lead Times for Brands
Packaging is where customers judge your brand before they touch the piece. Here is what stock and custom packaging actually costs and how long it takes.
The jewelry customer forms an impression of your brand in the first three seconds after opening the parcel, and almost all of that impression comes from the packaging, not the piece. A $90 sterling silver necklace in a flimsy plastic bag feels like a $20 impulse buy. The same necklace in a rigid box with a branded card feels like a $120 purchase. The piece is identical. The packaging is the cheapest margin you will ever buy - and the one most new brands skimp on, usually because they have not yet seen the unboxing conversion data. Once a brand measures how much of its 'packaging-related' complaints vanish after a box upgrade, the upgrade stops feeling like a cost and starts feeling like the single highest-return line in the margin stack.
The packaging stack most brands use
A complete retail packaging stack has four layers. You do not need all four at launch, but you should know what each one costs.
| Layer | Stock option cost | Custom option cost | Lead time |
|---|---|---|---|
| Outer shipping mailer | $0.40-$0.80 poly mailer | $1.20-$2.50 branded rigid mailer | stock / 15-25 days custom |
| Jewelry box or pouch | $0.50-$1.50 stock box | $1.50-$4.00 custom rigid box | stock / 20-35 days custom |
| Insert card / warranty | $0.05-$0.15 printed card | $0.20-$0.50 foil-stamped card | stock / 10-15 days |
| Polishing cloth | $0.20-$0.40 cloth | $0.50-$1.00 printed cloth | stock / 10-20 days |
Stock vs custom: when to switch
For the first 500 pieces, use stock packaging. Buy plain black or cream boxes from a packaging supplier (Alibaba, Uline, Packlane), and print your own cards on a local printer. The unit cost is low, the lead time is immediate, and you are not stuck holding 5,000 boxes of a design you hate after your first rebrand.
Switch to custom packaging around 1,000-2,000 pieces per year. The minimum order for a custom rigid box from a Chinese packaging factory is usually 500 units, and the unit price drops steeply above 1,000. At that volume, custom foil-stamped boxes cost roughly $1.50-$3.00 each and they lift the perceived value of every piece in the order.
Box, pouch, or both?
The choice depends on price point and channel. Direct-to-consumer shipping uses a pouch or a small box inside a mailer, because a rigid box adds dimensional weight and shipping cost. Brick-and-mortar retail wants a box that sits on a shelf or counter. Most brands end up running both: a stock pouch for DTC online orders, a custom box for wholesale retail accounts and gift purchases.
Pouches have one hidden advantage: they protect pieces in transit better than a loose box insert, and they survive being stuffed into a mailbox. Boxes look better on the unboxing video. Pick based on where your volume actually ships.
Foil stamping and special finishes
Foil stamping (hot foil) on a box or card is the single upgrade that reads as 'premium' to the customer. A one-color foil in gold, silver or matte black adds roughly $0.15-$0.40 per unit at volume. Embossing (raised, no foil) is similar cost and reads more understated. UV spot coating is more expensive and looks dated. Debossing (pressed in) is the most premium-looking and the most expensive, at $0.50-$1.00 per unit.
Do not stack finishes. A box with foil, embossing and spot UV looks like a wedding invitation, not a jewelry brand. Pick one finish and execute it cleanly.
Ordering packaging in time
This is the planning error. Custom packaging lead times run 20-35 days from approval, and they run through a separate supplier from the jewelry factory. If your jewelry ships in 30 days and you order the boxes on day 30, your jewelry arrives at your warehouse with nothing to go into. Order packaging 30 days before the jewelry is due to land, and keep a small safety stock (200 units) of your current box on hand so a late packaging shipment does not stop dispatch.
Sustainable packaging: worth the cost in 2026
Recycled cardboard boxes, FSC-certified paper pouches, and plastic-free mailers used to be a niche premium. In 2026 they are table stakes for DTC brands targeting millennial and Gen Z customers. The cost gap has narrowed: a recycled rigid box runs roughly $1.80-$3.50 vs $1.50-$3.00 for a virgin-fiber equivalent. For a brand that markets itself as conscious, the upgrade is part of the product. For a wholesale business selling to independent stores, stock packaging that does not distract from the piece itself. Do not over-invest in sustainability until your customer asks for it by name.
We coordinate packaging with production for brands that want a landed, packed-ready order. More on how we handle inserts, cards and boxes is on the OEM packaging page. The principle is one you can apply yourself: stock packaging for the first 500, custom packaging from 1,000 up, and always order the boxes before the jewelry.
