Building a Private Label Jewelry Brand: The 5-Step Launch Sequence
Commodity sterling sold at 3.2x retail when the brand was the moat. This 5-step launch sequence covers niche, supplier lock, legal and packaging.
A buyer in Brisbane launched a private-label silver line in 2024 with a USD 6,000 first order. By Q3 she had re-ordered four times, built a 4,000-name email list, and was selling DTC at 3.2x wholesale. The product was commodity sterling. The brand was the moat. Private label jewelry is not just relabeling stock — it is a build sequence, and the order of operations matters.
Step 1: pick a niche you can own
"Everyday silver" is not a niche. "Sterling earrings for sensitive ears, nickel-free, hypoallergenic" is. "Stackable rings under USD 60" is. The narrower the design range, the easier it is to write the product page, the photography brief, and the ad copy. Read 2026 wholesale trends and stock for where the demand is splitting.
Step 2: lock the supplier before you design
Do not design 50 SKUs and then hunt for a factory. Pick a supplier that already makes the base category well (silver casting, stone setting, plating), then co-design 10–15 SKUs around their existing tooling. This cuts MOQ and lead time in half. See private label packaging, tags and boxes.
Step 3: the maker's mark and legal footprint
In the U.S., sterling jewelry needs a 925 mark, a maker's mark, and a country-of-origin tag per the FTC Jewelers' Guide (16 CFR Part 23). Register your maker's mark in the state or with a national assay office if you sell into the UK. File a trademark on the brand name in your primary market before the first Instagram post. This costs USD 250–750 and stops a competitor from buying your name later.
Step 4: packaging and unboxing as the product
A USD 12 ring in a plain polybag is a commodity. The same ring in a 1mm cotton gift box with a branded card and a care insert is a brand. Budget USD 0.80–1.50 per piece on packaging at wholesale volumes. See custom jewelry packaging MOQ and branding minimums. Email capture on the packing slip also needs a consent line if you sell into the EU.
Step 5: launch in three waves
Wave 1 (week 1–4): 10 SKUs, sold to your existing list and 50 seed customers at cost-plus. Wave 2 (week 5–12): add 10 SKUs, run paid ads to the best-selling 3, cut the slowest 4. Wave 3 (month 4+): reorder winners, drop losers, start a second niche. Do not order 50 SKUs on day one; the MOQ math is the same as the small-buyer walk-through. Anchor your price band with wholesale-to-retail margin formula.
Pricing your first line: the 3x rule
A workable starting price is 3x landed cost. If a ring costs you USD 4.50 landed (product + packaging + freight + payment fee), sell it at USD 13.50–18. The 3x rule leaves room for 20% ad spend, 5% returns, and a 25% gross margin. Going to 4x works if your photography and brand story justify it; going to 2x means you will fund ads out of your own pocket. See the wholesale-to-retail margin formula for the full build-up.
Launch channel: where the first 50 customers come from
Do not start with cold ads. Start with: (1) your existing personal network and email list, (2) a 50-piece seed discount for friends and micro-influencers in your niche, and (3) one organic social channel (Instagram or TikTok, not both). After 30 days, the channel that produced the most reorders is the one you scale. Most private-label lines that fail do so because they launched 50 SKUs across 3 channels on day one, ran out of ad budget by week 6, and then had to discount the slow stock just to buy more inventory. Sequencing the launch beats widening the launch every single time — a focused 10-SKU line that sells beats a scattered 50-SKU line that half-sells.
FAQ
How much do I need to launch a private label line?
USD 5,000–10,000 landed: USD 3,000–6,000 on first inventory, USD 1,000–2,000 on packaging and photography, USD 1,000 on legal and ads.
Should I sell DTC or wholesale my own brand?
Start DTC. Once you have 500+ customers and a 3x margin, sell the same line to 5–10 independent boutiques as a secondary channel.
What if my supplier also sells my design to my competitor?
Write a 6–12 month exclusivity clause for the design, not the category. Pay a 5–10% premium for it. The supplier can still sell plain sterling; they cannot sell your exact design.
Do I need a jewelry-specific LLC?
No, a standard LLC or LTD works. You do need product liability insurance (USD 300–600/year) once you sell to the public.
