Private Label Jewelry Packaging: Tags, Boxes and Branding Basics

Holycome Editorial · August 3, 2026 · 12 min read

Tags are compliance documents first. Build a private-label packaging toolkit — hang tag, pouch, rigid box, care card — with realistic MOQs and the FTC disclosure lines you must print.

Your competitor's ring arrives in a rigid box with a black velvet insert, a woven brand ribbon, and a hang tag that reads "925 Sterling Silver — Designed in Copenhagen." Your ring arrives in a polybag with a printed sticker. Same factory, same alloy, 40% price difference at retail. Packaging is where private label either starts paying back or gives the whole margin away.

The tag is legally important, not decorative

Before aesthetics, get the disclosure line right. Under FTC 16 CFR Part 23 (16 CFR Part 23), tags and labels must disclose karat fineness for precious metal, the genus of any stone (moissanite must be labelled moissanite, not "diamond look"), and country of origin where required. A tag that says "925" on a plated brass piece is an actionable misrepresentation; so is a tag calling moissanite "white sapphire" or "diamond simulacrum" without the actual word. Build the tag as a compliance document first, a brand asset second. For EU lines, the same tag file carries your nickel-compliance evidence reference — see REACH nickel limits for the report your tag number should trace back to.

Minimum private-label toolkit

  • Hang tag — 350gsm cotton card, 45x90mm, one colour logo both sides. MOQ at Chinese printers is usually 1,000-2,000 tags; amortise across your whole season.
  • Jewellery pouch — suede or microfibre, 8x10cm, with blind-embossed logo. 500-piece MOQ is achievable at USD 0.35-0.70 each.
  • Rigid gift box — 500-piece MOQ, USD 1.20-2.50 each, insert matched to ring, pendant or bangle.
  • Branded cleaning cloth and care card — low cost, high perceived value; MOQ 1,000.
  • Barcoded SKU sticker — your internal SKU and the retail barcode (EAN/UPC) printed on a seal sticker.

Expect packaging to add USD 1.20-3.50 per unit to landed cost. That cost is recovered: brands with a unboxing system typically hold 58-65% gross margin versus 45% for polybag sellers. Work it through the margin formula before approving the box upgrade.

Sequence the spend like a launch, not like a showroom

New buyers usually over-buy packaging in the wrong order. The correct sequence is: tag first (it is legally required and cheap), pouch second (it drives the repeat-unboxing photo on social media), rigid box third (only on SKUs that have already proven sell-through). Buying a 2,000-unit rigid box for an unproven design is the most common way we see USD 2,000 of working capital locked in a shelf. If a SKU reorders twice, then invest in its dedicated box insert. Until then, stock boxes with a logo sticker do the job.

What factories can — and cannot — do

Most jewelry factories in Dongguan and Yiwu can print hang tags, supply stock boxes with a logo sticker, and assemble pouching. What they usually cannot do well: custom rigid boxes with offset printing, foiling and structured inserts. For those, use a specialist packaging supplier and have the jewelry factory do final packing into your cartons. MOQ stacking: packaging runs add 50-100 pieces to your per-SKU MOQ — read MOQ negotiation so packaging minimums do not surprise you. And choose a supplier that will assemble private labels without re-stamping your goods as theirs; vet that in the factory audit.

Common packaging mistakes

Buying 5,000 tags before validating which SKUs actually sell. Skipping the country-of-origin line because "retailers don't ask." Using a tag design that cannot be re-ordered for six months when the supplier changes printer. Keep one master tag PDF, one supplier relationship, and reorder in 2,000-tag batches tied to sell-through. For what customers reach for in 2026, match your box system to this season's stocking trends. And always proof the printed tag against your approved PDF before the carton ships — a swapped apostrophe or misspelled stone name on 1,000 tags is a recall, not a typo.

FAQ

What is the minimum private-label packaging budget for a first launch?

USD 1,500-3,000 for tags, pouches and a printed care card across 500-1,000 units. Rigid boxes are a phase-two spend after you know which SKUs sell.

Must the tag disclose country of origin?

For US imports, origin marking is required on the article or its container. For FTC compliance, karat and stone genus disclosure is required on the tag or invoice. Check the exact line with your customs broker; do not omit it on a guess.

Can the factory print my tags and ship goods in them?

Yes, and it is standard practice. Ask for a pre-production photo of the tagged piece before bulk packing, and require 2% spare tags in the carton for re-tagging.

Should I use moissanite certificate cards in the box?

Yes, but copy the lab exactly: "GRA certificate report number xxxx, girdle inscription verified." Do not relabel it as your own lab — that crosses the FTC disclosure line.

HOLYCOME supplies tag-ready private-label packaging: hang tags, suede pouches and rigid box inserts assembled at our line, with FTC-compliant disclosure lines pre-approved. Ask for the packaging spec sheet and cost adders per SKU.
