Silver Ring Plating Options: Rhodium, Gold, Rose, Black
Plating changes the look, the price, and the wear life of a silver ring. Here is which plating to stock by price point.
Sterling silver rings can be plated to look like white gold, yellow gold, rose gold, or black metal. The plating changes the entire character of the piece, and the plating thickness decides how long the look lasts. For a wholesale buyer, choosing the right plating is not just aesthetic - it is a pricing and returns decision.

Rhodium plating: the default
Rhodium is a platinum-group metal that gives silver a bright white finish. It is the default plating for most white-silver jewelry, because bare sterling has a slightly gray tone. Rhodium plating also seals the silver against tarnish. A 0.5 micron rhodium plate lasts 12-24 months under normal wear. It is the most common plating and the safest default.
Gold plating over silver
Gold plating over silver gives the look of 14k or 18k gold at a fraction of the price. The plating thickness matters: flash plating at 0.1 micron wears off in months. Heavy gold plating at 1.0-2.5 microns lasts 12-18 months. At 2.5 microns or thicker, the piece may qualify as vermeil under FTC rules. Specify the micron thickness on the PO, because 'gold plated' alone tells you nothing.
| Plating type | Thickness | Wear life | Cost per piece |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rhodium, flash | 0.1-0.3 µm | 3-6 months | $0.30-$0.60 |
| Rhodium, standard | 0.5-1.0 µm | 12-24 months | $0.80-$1.50 |
| Gold plate, heavy | 1.0-2.5 µm | 12-18 months | $0.50-$1.50 |
| Vermeil (legal) | ≥2.5 µm | 24+ months | $1.50-$3.00 |
| Black rhodium | 0.5-1.0 µm | 12-18 months | $1.00-$2.00 |
Rose gold plating
Rose gold plating is gold alloyed with copper, which gives the pink tone. It is popular in bridal and feminine designs. The plating wears like gold plate, and the copper tone can vary by batch. If you are stocking rose gold across multiple reorders, ask the factory to use the same plating bath for consistency. Rose gold from two different batches can look slightly different.
Black rhodium
Black rhodium gives a dark, matte look popular in men's jewelry, gothic, and modern designs. It is a thinner plating than rhodium and shows wear faster on high-friction areas (the inside of a ring band). It is a fashion finish, not an everyday finish. Stock it for the right designs, but expect a shorter wear life and price accordingly.
Specify thickness on the PO
The most common plating mistake is not specifying thickness. 'Rhodium plated' can mean 0.1 micron or 1.0 micron, and the wear life is 10x different. Write the micron thickness on the PO. The cost difference is small, and the customer-perceived difference is large. A ring that wears through its plating in 3 months is a return. A ring that wears for 18 months is a repeat customer.
Plating on engagement rings
One category where plating thickness matters most: engagement rings. A silver engagement ring that will be worn daily needs a thick plating. Specify 1.0 micron minimum on any silver ring sold as an engagement or promise ring. A flash-plated engagement ring wears through in months, and the customer returns it. The cost of the thicker plating is $0.50 per ring. The cost of a returned engagement ring is $50 in shipping plus a lost customer. Specify the thickness and price it into the retail. The customer who gets a ring that stays white for two years tells their friends. The customer who gets a ring that wears through in three months tells them too.
The plating wear point
Plating wears fastest on the high-friction points: the inside of a ring band, the back of a pendant, the post of an earring. These points rub against skin and clothing. A 0.5 micron rhodium plate wears through on the inside of a band in 6-12 months. A 1.0 micron plate lasts 18-24 months. If the piece is sold as everyday wear, specify the thicker plate. If it is sold as occasional wear, the standard plate is fine. Match the plating thickness to how the customer will actually wear it.
The replating service
A silver brand that offers a replating service keeps customers for years. A customer whose rhodium plate wears off in 18 months sends the ring back for a $15 replating. They get a like-new piece, and they do not buy a new ring. The replating service costs the factory $3-$5 and charges the customer $15-$25. It is a margin center, a customer retention tool, and a reason for the customer to keep the brand. Offer it as a warranty perk, and the lifetime value of every customer rises. Most silver brands skip this. The ones that offer it keep customers twice as long.
We stock silver rings in rhodium, gold, rose gold, and black rhodium, with micron thickness specified on every quote. More on our plating options is on the 925 silver program page. The plating is not a detail. It is the finish the customer sees, and the wear life they experience.
