The Wholesale Ring Size Chart: What Sizes to Stock and How to Size International Buyers
Ring sizing is the most common stock-planning mistake in silver wholesale. Stock the wrong sizes and you hold dead inventory. Stock the right distribution and you sell through.
Rings are the only major jewelry category where one SKU splits into ten or more sizes. A pair of earrings is one SKU. A pendant is one SKU. A ring in size 6, 7, 8 and 9 is four SKUs, each with its own inventory. Stock the wrong distribution and you tie up cash in sizes nobody buys while running out of the size everyone wants. Ring size planning is the single highest-leverage inventory decision in a silver wholesale program.
The size distribution that sells
Across US women's rings, demand clusters tightly. Roughly 70% of women's ring sales fall in sizes 6, 7 and 8. Size 7 is the single most common size, often called the 'mass market' size. Sizes 5 and 9 move slowly. Sizes 4 and 10 move rarely. The standard stocking distribution looks like this:
| US size | EU equivalent | % of women's demand | Stock share |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 49 | 8% | 10% |
| 6 | 52 | 20% | 20% |
| 7 | 54 | 35% | 35% |
| 8 | 57 | 20% | 20% |
| 9 | 59 | 10% | 10% |
| 10 | 62 | 7% | 5% |
For men's rings, the distribution shifts up: sizes 9, 10 and 11 carry roughly 70% of demand, with size 10 the most common. If you stock men's bands, mirror the same logic but shifted up three sizes.
International size conversions
Your US customers will be size 6, 7, 8. Your UK customers will be sizes L, M, N. Your EU customers will be sizes 52, 54, 57. If you sell across markets, stock the sizes your market actually orders. A US brand does not need to stock UK half-sizes; a UK brand does. Most factories can cast to any sizing standard, but the conversion has to be specified on the PO.
- US 6 = UK L½ = EU 52 = circumference ~52mm
- US 7 = UK N = EU 54 = circumference ~54mm
- US 8 = UK Q = EU 57 = circumference ~57mm
Use a physical ring sizer, not a paper chart, when you approve samples. The millimeter difference between sizes is small enough that a chart reading can mis-size.
The resize question
Sterling silver rings can be resized up or down by roughly two sizes. That flexibility is a feature: if you stock size 7 and the customer needs size 8, a local jeweler can resize it for $20-$40. It is also a margin trap: if you stock only size 7 and sell through resizing, you are eating a service cost on every order. The practical middle ground is to stock the three core sizes (6, 7, 8) and offer resizing as a service for outliers.
Rings with full-eternity pavé (stones all the way around the band) cannot be resized, because resizing breaks the stones. If you stock eternity bands, stock a wider size range because the customer cannot resize. That is a special case: more SKUs, more inventory risk.
How this changes your first buy
On a first buy of 100 rings in one style, a common mistake is buying 10 rings in each of 10 sizes. The better buy is 5-10 rings in size 5, 20 in size 6, 35 in size 7, 20 in size 8, 10 in size 9, and 5 in size 10. That matches the demand curve. If you buy 10 each, you will sell out of size 7 in a month and be left holding 90% of your size 5 and size 10 stock a year later.
On reorder, you refine. If your size 6 sells faster than expected next season, shift the distribution. The first buy is an estimate; the reorder is informed by actual data.
Half-sizes and fit
Half-sizes (6.5, 7.5) sell, but not as much as whole sizes. Most brands stock whole sizes only on the first buy and add half-sizes in the reorder for specific popular styles. Also note that wider bands fit tighter than thin bands - a customer who wears a 7 in a thin band may need a 7.5 in a 6mm wide band. If your collection includes wide bands, size up by half in the spec.
Sizing as a service, not a defect
When a customer orders online and picks the wrong size, most brands absorb the resize cost once. It is cheaper than a return. Offer a free first resize on rings, with the customer paying only for return shipping. The cost of a resize at a local jeweler is $20-$40; the cost of losing a customer who had a bad online sizing experience is much higher. Build the free resize into the price, not into the complaint queue.
We supply rings in US whole sizes by default, with the size distribution on the PO matching the demand curve above, and we can cast to UK or EU sizing on request. More on ring sizing and stock planning is on the 925 silver rings page. The size chart is not optional; it is the inventory plan. Stock the distribution, not the alphabet.
