MOQ on Custom Jewelry Packaging: Branding Minimums That Actually Work
Custom packaging does not have to start at 5,000 boxes. Here are the realistic MOQ bands for logo stamps, tags, pouches and boxes — and where the cost actually lives.
You want your brand name on the box. The first quote comes back: 1,000 pieces minimum at USD 2.20 each, plus a plate charge of USD 150. For a new brand doing 50 orders a month, that is two years of boxes sitting in a corner. The quote is not wrong — it is just for a full-colour printed box. There is a cheaper ladder below it that most buyers never ask about. Custom packaging branding starts at a hundred pieces, not a thousand.
The four branding levels, by MOQ
Logo stamp (hot foil or emboss) — MOQ 100–300 units, plate charge USD 40–100, unit cost USD 0.80–1.50 for a small box. This is the entry point. Printed tag or card — MOQ 100–500, unit cost USD 0.05–0.20, and the highest brand-per-dollar return. A hang tag with your logo and care instructions does more for perceived brand than the box does. Pouch or sleeve — MOQ 200–500, unit cost USD 0.30–0.90. Full-colour printed rigid box — MOQ 500–1,000, unit cost USD 1.80–4.00, and the one most buyers quote first. Build the whole system around these tiers per private-label tags and boxes.
Where the cost actually lives
It is not the unit. It is the plate and the setup. A hot-foil plate costs USD 40–100 one time; a full-colour print plate run costs USD 150–400. That means ordering 100 boxes at a high unit price sometimes costs the same as ordering 500 at a lower unit price, because the plate is the fixed chunk. Do the math: compare total landed cost (plate + units + freight) at 100, 300 and 500 before choosing. For most new brands, 300 pieces hits the cost sweet spot. Tie packaging cost into landed product cost per the wholesale-to-retail margin formula.
The artwork and compliance checks
Your box, tag and pouch should carry: brand logo, brand name, material disclosure ("925 sterling silver"), care instructions, and (for EU) the nickel-safe or REACH note where relevant. The material wording must match FTC 16 CFR Part 23 — "925 silver" on a tag that ships with a plated piece is a disclosure error. Use vector artwork (AI or PDF outline), not a JPEG; foil stamping needs a clean vector. Ask for a physical proof before the full run — USD 20–40 for a stamped sample box is cheaper than 300 wrong boxes. For the metal and plating side, see REACH nickel limits for importers.
How the MOQ ladder grows with you
Order one: stamped tags (MOQ 100) plus plain stock boxes. Order three: add logo-stamped pouches (MOQ 200). Order six: move to logo-stamped small boxes (MOQ 300). Order twelve: consider full-colour rigid boxes if volume justifies. Each step reuses the same plate and artwork, so setup cost does not repeat. This ladder mirrors the supplier payment ladder in negotiating payment terms as a new buyer — you do not buy the full program on day one, you earn it. Keep packaging SKUs in the catalog per the SKU structure guide.
What artwork comes back from the factory
Vector files (AI, EPS, outlined PDF) convert cleanly to foil plates. JPEG or PNG at 300 dpi often comes back blurred on a small box. If you only have a raster logo, budget USD 30-60 for a graphic to redraw it as a vector, which is cheaper than 300 boxes with a fuzzy logo. Keep one master vector file of your logo in the exact hex colours you use on the web; that file feeds tags, boxes, pouches and hang signage without rework.
Compare at least three suppliers on any packaging line. The per-unit price moves, but the plate charge and the proof turnaround time move more. A supplier that sends a physical proof in three days is worth a few cents per box more than one that sends it in three weeks, because the wrong-box surprise costs far more than the discount.
FAQ
What is the lowest MOQ for branded jewelry packaging?
Branded hang tags at 100 pieces, or hot-foil logo stamps on plain boxes at 100–300. Full-colour printed boxes start at 500.
Is the plate charge a one-time cost?
Yes, if you reuse the same artwork. Reordering the same stamp later only pays for units, not the plate.
Should we brand the box or the tag first?
The tag. It costs 10–20% of the box and carries the disclosure and care info customers actually read.
Can we mix branding levels across SKUs?
Yes. Use branded tags across all SKUs, reserve stamped boxes for your hero and gift lines, and keep plain boxes for value SKUs.
