Stud Earrings Wholesale: Backing Types and SKU Planning That Reduce Headaches

Holycome Editorial · August 19, 2026 · 12 min read

Studs are the highest-volume entry SKU in jewelry. Backing type, post gauge and size ladder decide whether your stud line reorders or returns. Here is the plan.

A buyer orders 500 pairs of stud earrings at a great price, and six weeks later half the customers message: the backs fall off within a week, the posts bend, and one pair arrived as a single earring not a pair. Studs look like the simplest wholesale product in the catalog. They are actually the one with the most hidden SKU decisions, and the backing choice alone drives a disproportionate share of returns and warranty claims.

The four backing types and who uses them

  • Push back (butterfly) — the default. Cheap, easy to put on, but loosens with wear. Best for low-price, short-wear studs; not for active customers.
  • Screw back — threads onto the post. Secure, slower to wear. Standard for diamond and solitaire studs sold as keepsakes. Slightly higher cost per pair.
  • Locking / clutch back — a plastic or rubber-lined clutch that grips the post. Comfortable, nickel-safe when the clutch is silicone. Preferred for everyday-wear and sensitive-ear lines.
  • Lametta / figure-8 back — a double-loop safety used on heavier studs and drops. Not for small studs.

For wholesale planning: stock push-back on entry-price studs, locking/clutch on mid-price everyday studs, and screw-back on solitaire or bridal. Never mix backs within a SKU — it confuses your own customers and your own QC. For EU-sensitive-ear lines, the clutch material itself must meet nickel-release limits under REACH Annex XVII (EC 1907/2006); detail in the nickel limits guide.

Post gauge and length are SKU decisions

Posts come in standard gauges — roughly 0.7-0.9 mm diameter for women's studs, 1.0-1.2 mm for men's or heavier stones. A post that is too thin bends; too thick is uncomfortable. Standard post length is about 10-11 mm. Write the gauge on the PO: "0.8 mm sterling post, 11 mm length, butterfly push back," not just "silver stud earring." And order by the pair, not by the piece. A factory quoting 500 pieces may ship 500 individual earrings — 250 pairs — which halves your sellable inventory. This single line in the PO prevents the most common stud-order mistake.

The size ladder that reorders

Studs sell in size bands, not in one size. Plan a first stud order across: 3-4 mm (tiny everyday, USD 8-15 retail), 5-6 mm (the volume band, USD 18-35 retail), 7-8 mm (statement, USD 35-70 retail), and one solitaire size (6.5 mm equivalent to 1 ct, moissanite or lab-grown, USD 80-180 retail). The 5-6 mm band moves 50-60% of volume; the tiny and statement bands cover the edges. For the solitaire band, match stone paper to our GRA vs IGI disclosure guide. Plan the size split in the PO and price each band through the margin formula; the small sizes have the lowest absolute margin per piece but the fastest turn.

SKU planning: colour, finish and stone

Avoid a catalog of 40 unique stud designs. That splits your order into 40 tiny runs and kills the MOQ. Instead, build a matrix: 3 stone types (moissanite, cz, colored gem), 3 finishes (rhodium, gold flash, rose gold), 2-3 sizes. That gives you 18-27 SKUs from a small number of production setups. Reorder the cells that sell; discontinue the ones that do not. For the colored-gem cells, see the reorder list in which colored stones retailers actually buy. Pair MOQs: 100 pairs per SKU is realistic for a first order under our small-buyer MOQ ladder; reorder MOQs drop to 50 pairs.

Packaging studs for retail

Studs travel in an earring card with a sealed back, not loose in a polybag. The card protects the posts from bending in transit and gives the retail customer a display-ready unit. Ask the factory to assemble the card with your branded hang tag from the private-label packaging system. The cost add is USD 0.15-0.40 per pair, and it cuts transit-bent-post returns by roughly half — one of the best packaging ROIs in the category.

FAQ

Push back or locking back for everyday studs?

Locking or silicone-lined clutch for everyday wear; push back only for low-price, occasional-wear studs. The difference in warranty claims is visible within 60 days.

Do we order by piece or by pair?

By pair, explicitly on the PO. 500 pieces from a factory often means 250 pairs. Write 500 pairs (1,000 individual earrings) to remove ambiguity.

What size moves fastest?

5-6 mm moissanite or cz studs in rhodium sterling. Roughly half of stud volume in independent retail lands in this band.

Are plastic back clutches nickel-safe?

The clutch itself is usually silicone or plastic; the post and the metal back are the nickel-sensitive parts. Require the EN 1811 test on the finished earring, not on the alloy. See REACH nickel limits.
