Lab-Grown Diamond Pricing in 2026: What Actually Changed

Holycome Editorial · September 26, 2026 · 12 min read

LGD wholesale prices stepped down again in 2026. This guide covers the capacity, certification and platform forces behind it, and which stone sizes still hold margin.

Lab-Grown Diamond Pricing in 2026: What Actually Changed

A buyer in Rotterdam re-ordered the same 1.0ct F VS1 lab-grown solitaire she bought in March 2025 — and paid 41% less in March 2026. The stone spec had not changed. The price book had. This is the second straight year of structural deflation in lab-grown diamond (LGD) wholesale, and the buyers who win in 2026 are the ones who understand what moved, not just how far.

What actually drove the 2025–2026 price step-down

Three things converged. First, Chinese CVD and HPHT capacity came online faster than retail absorption — roughly 3–4x the demand in the 1.0–2.0ct D–G VS range. Second, the IGI and GIA grading scales stabilized, so buyers no longer paid a "certificate uncertainty" premium. Third, loose-stone platforms (Lightbox-style white-label programs) pushed per-carat prices into a publicly visible band, which anchored retail expectations. Read the lab-grown diamond background and the GIA 4Cs reference for the baseline terminology.

Where prices fell the most — and where they did not

The biggest drops are in 1.0–1.5ct, F–H, VS range round brilliants, where wholesale prices are down roughly 35–45% year over year. Princess cuts and ovals held up better (down ~20%). Small melee (under 0.30ct) barely moved because it is cut-and-polish labor, not reactor capacity. Colored LGD (fancy yellow, blue, pink) actually firmed because producers cut back on those runs. Compare against moissanite price per carat in 2026 — moissanite still sits at 1/8 to 1/12 the LGD price, so the two are not direct substitutes at the retail level yet.

Certificate requirements buyers should not skip

A 1ct+ LGD sold retail without a lab report is a return magnet. IGI is the dominant wholesale lab for LGD; GIA reports are a small premium. The certificate must state "lab-grown" or "synthetic" explicitly. For the full checklist, see lab-grown diamond wholesale certificate requirements. Also check importing lab-grown diamonds with traceability — EU and U.S. customs expect the certificate to travel with the parcel.

What this means for your buy plan in 2026

Do not chase the bottom. A supplier quoting 1ct F VS1 at "80% below Rapaport" is either off-grade, off-cert, or running a spot dump. The sane approach: lock a price band with 2–3 suppliers for the next 60 days, buy in matched melee packs for earring and tennis-bracelet programs (see tennis bracelet wholesale stone count and karat), and reorder only on sell-through. Our 2025 wholesale reorder data shows the same pattern: rounds moved fastest, ovals sat longest, and melee packs for earrings and bracelets outperformed solitaires by 2.3x in unit volume.

Retailer margin math in a deflating market

When wholesale drops 40%, most retailers cut retail by 20% and pocket the difference. That works for one cycle. The risk is that the next buyer sees the same stone at a lower advertised price six months later — and returns your piece. The fix is to anchor the retail offer on design, setting and service rather than on the per-carat number. Walk through the wholesale-to-retail margin formula before you reprice.

Spot prices vs contract prices: what to lock

LGD wholesale pricing is not indexed to a single spot board the way gold is. It moves with reactor utilization, polishing capacity and retail inventory levels. In practice, ask two suppliers for a 30-day price band in writing and use the midpoint as your planning number. If a supplier quotes a price that is 15% below the band, ask why — the answer is usually off-cert, off-color, or a clearance on melee that will not reorder.

For retailers, the practical move is to stop advertising per-carat prices on the product page. Sell the ring, the setting and the warranty. The stone is a component; the design is the product. This protects you when the next price step-down arrives and your customer compares your current ad to last year's listing.

FAQ

Are lab-grown diamonds still a good buy for resale?

Yes for retail inventory, no for holding. LGD does not hold secondary value the way mined stones do, so buy to sell within 90–120 days, not to warehouse.

Should I buy 1ct now or wait for further drops?

The 1ct F–H VS band is close to marginal production cost; further 20%+ drops are unlikely in 2026. Buy what you can sell this quarter.

Is GIA really worth the premium over IGI?

For stones over 2ct, yes. For 0.5–1.5ct retail-facing jewelry, IGI is the market standard and the GIA premium does not come back in resale.

What about fancy colored lab-grown stones?

Yellow and blue LGD have held their price; pink is the volatile one. Buy on demand, not on speculation.

HOLYCOME stocks IGI-certified lab-grown diamonds in 0.30–3.0ct, with matched melee packs and updated weekly price sheets. Ask for the current LGD price list and a side-by-side sample set of rounds, ovals and cushions.
